Session 13 -  Responsible Use of Technology

Let's discuss what teachers can do to provide digital equity....

Activity 1:  The Digital Divide

Students will be divided into 3 research teams. Each group will research one of  three topics (i.e., race/ethnicity/SES, or gender, or disabilities) and present a brief report (max. 10 minutes)  to the class. Think of your report as a series of "talking points" rather than a formal presentation.

Prepare your report by responding to the questions on CourseCompass.com.  Present it using the computer and projector in the front of the lab.  Please list the names of your group in your response.

  • Assess the talents of your group and divvy up the tasks.  Roles include:  facilitator, researcher, presentation designer, and reporter(s). Individuals can perform more than one role, e.g., researcher plus facilitator, researcher plus reporter, etc.

  • During your group report, feel free to emphasize "unique material" your group uncovered and avoid repeating information the other group has already presented. Please do not exceed the 10-minute time limit

Research Teams

Each research team should answer the question for only one target group, i.e., persons of different races, ethnic groups, and SES levels; or for girls vs. boys, or for persons with disabilities.

  • What is meant by the term “Digital Divide"?  How does it effect persons of different races/ethnic groups and SES levels; girls vs. boys; or persons with disabilities?  Is this a uniquely American phenomenon?

  • What initiatives are government agencies instituting to combat the digital divide for your chosen group?
  • What activities are community and private sector organizations undertaking to combat the digital divide for your chosen group?
  • What are a few of the most important research findings related to the digital divide and your chosen group?
  • What guidelines can schools and teachers follow to lessen the impact of the digital divide for your chosen group?
