Session 4Education Portals & Search Strategies

 Let's begin by signing on to My UEN ......

 

Activity 1 - ERIC/EBSCO

  • Presentation:
    • Setting the Context:  Research Paper
    • PowerPoint Presentation on ERIC/EBSCO on CourseCompass.Com under Lectures
    • Overview of Search Strategies using ERIC/EBSCO
    Directions for Accessing ERIC/EBSCO from "My UEN."

     

  • Activity:
    • Using ERIC/EBSCO, identify the topic for your research paper (refer to the guide you printed  http://library.ucf.edu/Instruct/Education/eric_user_guide.htm)
    • Conduct a search of ERIC/EBSCO and identify useful search terms from the thesaurus
    • Practice emailing a few potentially useful articles to yourself
      • Send me an email with: a) your topic for your research paper, and b) at least 3 thesaurus search terms, and c) titles of a few articles.  Remember to include TL 6950 in the subject line of your subject line along with a descriptive title, e.g., TL 6950 - Research Paper Topic.

Activity 2 - Pioneer Library (postponed until next week)

  • Presentation:
    • PowerPoint presentation on Pioneer on CourseCompass.Com

     

  • Activity:
    • Working with a colleague, spend 15 minutes exploring several of the following sites that you read about on the Pioneer Libary handout http://pioneer-library.org/resources/handout.pdf.  Then, from among the following, choose 1 site to review that is appropriate for your students.

    • Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia
    • MAS Ultra- School Edition
    • Middle Search Plus
    • Newspaper Source
    • Primary Search
    • Searchasaurus - An interface for elementary schools

    • SIRS Knowledge Source
    • Wilson Biographies Plus
    • World Book Online
    • Deseret News Archives
    • Salt Lake Tribune Archives

     

    • Your review should include:  a) general features of the site, b) how you would have your students use the database.

    NOTE:  UEN provides several resources for teachers on using Pioneer including tutorials, handouts, and a letter to be sent home for students (http://pioneer-library.org/resources/ )

Activity 3 - Marco Polo (postponed until next week)

  • Activity:Marco Polo is considered to be a premier educational website. 
    • Working with a colleague, access Marco Polo and spend 15 minute exploring several of its sites.  Then, choose 1 of the following sites to review that is appropriate for your students:
