Session 8 -  Web Tools for Designing Instruction

Let's begin by signing on to My UEN ......

Activity 1:  The UEN "Curriculum Web Sites (Tours) Editor"

The UEN Curriculum Web Sites (Tours) Editor may be used to develop inquiry-based projects for students.  In addition, it may be used for other purposes, such as designing a class web page.

We will begin by exploring tours that teachers have developed which are shown at:

http://www.uen.org/tours/.  Take a "field trip" in your area of interest to discover how other teachers have used this tool.  Then, design a "practice tour" using all of the features it entails.   Refer to the tutorial http://www.uensd.org/manuals/manuals/Integration/dvt.pdf, as needed.

Your "practice tour" should be linked to your "My UEN" page.

NOTE:  You may post your Practice Tour on your public "My UEN" page without selecting the "Publish" feature.  Publish adds your tour to the UEN database so that other teachers can search for activities and access them.  If you do not wish to have your tour to be added to the database, but you do want to make it public so it could be used by your students, return to your "My UEN" page and use the "Edit" feature to make the tour public.  Then, you simply refer your students to your "My UEN" URL to view the activity.

Be prepared to participate in a group discussion regarding:

  • What are the intended use of this tool?  How else might it be used?
  • What features of the tool do you find useful?  Which would you use?  Why or why not?
  • How does this tool compare to TrackStar?  Which tool might you use for your Inquiry-Based project and why?

Activity 2:  Discussion of the Rubric for the Inquiry-Based Project

Navigate to CourseCompass and your responses to this week's discussion forum question.  We will discuss your suggestions for designing the rubric I will use to evaluate your projects.

Summary of My Expections:

  • Applicable to your students

  • Tied to the Utah Core Curriculum

  • Incorporates the principles of engaged learning

  • Emphasizes higher order thinking skills, may incorporate the Big6 ("What needs to be done?  What can I use to find what I need?  Where can I find what I need?  What information can I use?  How can I put my information together?  How will I know if I did my job well? " (Culpepper, 1996 cited in Grabe & Grabe, 2000, p. 142).

  • Designed with a web tool such as:  TrackStar or UEN Tour's Editor, or  another instructor-approved web-design tool.  For students who are accomplished web designers, you may use Netscape Composer, Dreamweaver, FrontPage or code your own page, but obtain instructor approval before starting work.

  • Linked to your "My UEN" page and incorporates the "rubric tool."

  • Linked to the "Lesson Plan" tool?

  • Visually Appealing

  • Other????

Activity 3:  My Edesk (If time permits)

If time permits, we will also explore My Edesk (a new service in beta version from UEN) http://www.myedesk.org/refdesk.aspx.  Explore this site and its tutorial and be prepared to participate in a class discussion regarding how you might use this site in your teaching.
