Session 9 -  Web Tools for Designing Instruction

Let's begin by exploring elements of web page design ......

Activity 1:  Web Page Design

Working in small groups, we will explore the resources below to determine features of good web page design.   Then, we will discuss them as a group.  Have one member serve as the facilitator for your group and another as the recorder to jot down the group's thoughts to refer to during the class discussion.

The questions your group should address include:

  • What are some elements of good web page design?
  • What are some design flaws that experts recommend that you avoid?
  • Look at Morris and Buckland's "Fixer-Uppers," http://www.uvm.edu/~jmorris/fixups.html. How would you re-design the 4 sites?

Designing Class Web Pages Using the UEN "Curriculum Web Sites (Tours) Editor"

As you know from reading Web Pages Made Easy by Jessica Anderson, The UEN Curriculum Web Sites (Tours) Editor along with My E-desk may be used to develop class web sites.  We will begin by exploring tours that teachers have developed which are shown at: http://my.uen.org/myuen/servlet/MyUen%3fservice=process_public&teacher_id=46552

(see the "My Curriculum Web Sites" section).

Then, design a "practice class web site using the Tours Editor. Use the planning form and information in the handout that contains selected pages from Web Pages Made Easy by Jessica Anderson. Your "practice page" may be linked to your "My UEN" page, but you need not make it "public."

NOTE:  You may post your Practice Class Web Page on your public "My UEN" page without selecting the "Publish" feature.  Publish adds your tour to the UEN database so that other teachers can search for activities and access them.  If you do not wish to have your tour to be added to the database, but you do want to make it public so it could be used by your students, return to your "My UEN" page and use the "Edit" feature to make the tour public.  Then, you simply refer your students to your "My UEN" URL to view the activity.

Group Discussion

Be prepared to participate in a group discussion regarding:

  • What options do teachers have for publishing class web pages (e.g., Tours Editor vs. HTML editing programs such as Dreamweaver, Netscape Composer, etc.).  What are the pros and cons of different methods?
  • What guidelines does your district expect you to follow in developing and posting Class Web Pages?  What resources are available to you?
  • What are the benefits/drawbacks of developing a class web page?
  • Have you or will you develop a class web page?  If so, what method will you use?
