Activity 1 - Pioneer Library

- Presentation:
- PowerPoint presentation on Pioneer on CourseCompass.Com
- Activity:
- Working with a colleague or by yourself, spend 15 minutes
exploring several of the following sites that you read about on
the Pioneer Libary handout

Then, from among the following, choose 1 site to review that is
appropriate for your students.

- MAS Ultra- School Edition

- Primary Search
- Searchasaurus - An interface for elementary
schools
- TOPICsearch

- SIRS Knowledge Source
- Wilson Biographies Plus
- World Book Online
- Deseret News Archives
- Salt Lake Tribune Archives
- Your review should include: a) name of the database,
b)general features of the
database, and c) how you would have your students use the database.

- Working with a colleague or by yourself, access Marco Polo
and spend 15 minute exploring several of its sites. Then,
choose 1 of the following sites to review that is appropriate
for your students:

- Econedlink
- Edsitement
- Illuminations
- ReadWriteThink
- ScienceNetLinks
- Xpeditions
- Your review should include: a) name of the site, b)general features of the
site, c) types of content included that is relevant for your
students, and d) strategies for using this resource in teaching.

under the space provided. Be prepared to participate in a class discussion on the site you
reviewed.
Activity 3 - Web Site Evaluation

Navigate to:

Working in small groups, you will complete the activity assigned to group 1,
2, or 3. Each
group should choose a facilitator, a reporter, several researchers,
and a spokesperson. Using
Kirk's criteria, evaluate your assigned site and be prepared to participate in a
class discussion.
Although general criteria for evaluating web sites are
useful, educators need to take into consideration the instructional aspects
of web sites. Here's a form
that you might find helpful as you evaluate web sites in your specialty
areas.
